I'm an engineer and electrician; can I install the solar power system myself?

: Although solar systems are not that highly complex, do it your-self installation is not recommended. There are a number of complex standards and legislative requirements that apply which require trained, licensed electricians to be responsible for the installation of your solar power system. Failure to adhere to these standards and installation rules could not only void your product warranties but also your insurance policies and after all your are installing high voltage electricity – it needs an expert – full stop.

The selection, matching and configuration of the various components is also important and requires a sequence for commissioning that can damage your solar power system/inverter if not carried out in accordance with training and instructions from you panel/inverter manufacturers. Roof attachment is also critical and needs to be handled by approved contractors and to NZ Standards if roof warranties and leaks are to be avoided.

Safety is also a primary consideration. Solar systems produce high voltage DC electricity which can if handled improperly can can cause Death via the serious risk of electrocution. Once inverters are connected, we are dealing with 240V AC which by law requires a licensed electrician and needs to be approved by the relevant electrical bodes before being switched on.

All solar installers are also required to undergo rigorous working at heights and occupational health and safety training to prevent injury to themselves or others when working on roofs, and must use approved and regularly maintained fall protection equipment. So if you want to install a solar power system, don’t’ risk it, use a professional.

Solar PV systems are to be properly and carefully installed by licensed and professional installers for long tern benefits
